Help keep the planet green and keep a little extra cash in your pocket by using these less than obvious energy efficiency tips for your home.

  • Ditch the desktop:  By using a laptop or tablet you can cut your energy consumption by nearly a third.  You can stretch that even farther by unplugging your device as soon as it is fully charged and then run of battery for as long as possible.
  • Speed up the spin cycle:  Many modern washing machines have options that allow you increase the speed for the spin cycle.  This extracts more water, thus reducing the time your dryer will need to operate in order to get those clothes dry.  Letting the washing machine run a bit longer on the spin cycle is more economical that running the dryer.
  • Charge on the go:  With so many devices needing to be charged, you can use your commute as a convenient way to keep your eco-friendly smartphone or tablet ready.  Your car is already producing “free” electricity, since you are already operating the vehicle, use the power it produces to the full potential.  Charge as many devices as you can during your commute.
  • Lamps in the corner: Yes, you have very pretty lamps that you want everyone to see, but sticking them in the corner will save you money.  This is because the light will reflect off the walls, allowing you to use lower wattage bulbs and use less lights in general.
  • Bundle up the water heater:  To save up to 9 percent on your water heating bill, wrap your water heater with a fiberglass blanket.  Keeping it bundled up will reduce the wasted heat, thus less energy wasted keeping your water hot.
