8 Trending Ecofriendly Gift Ideas

Whether it’s for the holidays, a birthday, Earth Day or some other special occasion, there are always plenty of ecofriendly gift ideas to choose from for the special someone in your life.

Once, that involved getting a reusable grocery bag. Times have moved on from then (although that’s still a good idea). The following looks at ecofriendly gift ideas that are currently trending, divided into different environmental areas.

Water Conservation

These two ecofriendly gift ideas both help the oceans, which are being polluted at an alarming rate – a study in 2015 estimated 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year. It’s expected to increase tenfold in the next decade unless drastic steps are taken to change how garbage is collected and managed.

Bracelets for the Ocean

4Ocean sells bracelets that help the oceans. For every bracelet sold (usually around $20), it funds the removal of one pound of plastic garbage from the ocean. The company has already removed billions of pounds of plastic from the world’s oceans. The bracelet itself is made of recyclable material.

Stainless Steel Water Bottle

One way to help keep plastic out of the ocean is to not use as much. A stainless-steel water bottle is reusable, well, forever. And it keeps any chemicals from plastic leaching into your water.

Energy Storage

The less energy a home uses, the better it is for the environment because of lower fossil fuel consumption. Here are a couple of ideas to help your loved ones and friends make a difference.

High-Efficiency Lights

This is an idea that is not new, but plenty of people have not taken advantage. These lights allow people to cut down on energy use – some by as much as 75% versus incandescent lights. Consider getting flashlights with LED bulbs or reading lamps that also use LED lights.

Solar-Powered Toy

This is a great idea for those who are buying for kids. Start them off early learning about energy conservation by buying them a toy that runs on solar power, which you can find in the search results on Google.

Minimalist Living

Here are some ideas for those who have made the commitment to cut down on, well, everything. Show respect for what they are trying with these gift ideas.

Give Experiences

The minimalists are onto something. A University of San Francisco study found that people are happier with experiences than they are with things. So, buy your special minimalist an experience, which can include everything from a free day at the local mediation center to a gift in their name to an environmental cause.

Cool Memberships

How about a membership in the local yoga center? Or one to the local art museum or natural science and history museum? Think of the cool places in your area. There is bound to be one that is the perfect fit for your gift recipient.

Green Products

There are too many green products to mention, which is a good thing. That means you have plenty of choices. However, to get you started, here are a couple of ideas that are relatively new, not mentioned a lot and pretty cool.

Flip Flop Doormats

This is now a thing. Part of what gets thrown away every year are flip-flops, and now you can buy a doormat made from these recycled throwaways.

Soap Nuts

How about washing your clothes from nuts that drop from trees? If that sounds interesting, then check out Maggie’s Soap Nuts, which offers the dried fruit of the soapberry tree to wash your laundry. It’s advertised as doing more loads than regular detergent, and it’s all natural.

The wonderful thing about the environmental movement is that it has led to more gift ideas than ever. Keep them in mind the next time you are shopping for a gift.
