What Are the Best Electric Motorcycles?

Electric motorcycles are about to become the next big thing. A perfect fit for urban dwellers looking for transportation other than a fuel-guzzling car, these motorcycles offer an attractive alternative to cars and trucks.

While every electric motorcycle has its difference, most will hit upon these major advantages. With electric bikes there is:

  • No noise
  • No smell
  • Low maintenance costs
  • Low fuel costs

The following looks at some of the best brands. Most are already on the market, and three out of the five on this list are from Europe. Two American companies, however, have jumped into the fray and are seeking to break into the electric motorcycle market.

Harley-Davidson Livewire

Every motorcycle fan with an interest in where the electric version could go has an interest in the Harley-Davidson Livewire, which has been discussed for many years but looks to finally start shipping to customers in the second half of 2019. Among many cool features such as Showa shocks and Bluetooth connectivity, the Livewire goes from zero to 60 in three seconds.

Zero SR/F

Started in a garage in California, the Zero SR/F launched earlier this year in Amsterdam. The bike has a 200-mile range and is the industry leader in connectivity, control, and power, according to Zero Motorcycles. They also consider the SR/F the “future of motorcycling.”

Vespa Elettrica

There’s no name more synonymous with small cycles than Vespa, and the Italian company is now taking orders on its new electric version, the Elettrica. The motorcycle is advertised for city use, much like the company’s famous line of scooters, and has a range of 62 miles. Much in keeping with the company’s style, the new motorcycle also comes with an array of cool accessories.

Energica Ego

Also from Italy, this electric motorcycle is already on the market. The Ego took the 2017 Electric Bike of the Year award from Motorcycle News. The Ego is the basis for racing bikes and built by the same company that has built Formula One racing cars for years. The bike also goes from zero to 60 in three seconds, much like the Livewire. It’s considered the first Italian street-legal electric motorcycle.

Super Soco TS

Built by an Austria-based company, the Super Soco has been making headlines for several years. Reviews have been strong for the electric motorcycle, which has one of the most detailed webpages on its lineup. The company calls its bikes mopeds, and the TS comes in a variety of styles. These bikes are a bit further developed than the competitors in this new market, but they will soon have plenty of competition from the likes of Harley-Davidson and Zero.

The electric motorcycle could prove very popular both with bike enthusiasts and those who live in urban environments who are tired of using a car. These new models offer the style and speed of a motorcycle, with far fewer fuel costs and a very small impact on the environment.
